I’ve been a book lover all my life—and like many of you, I’m always trying to sneak in more reading time between commuting, running errands, and chores around the house. Enter audiobooks. Whether I’m doing a puzzle, folding laundry, or gardening, I almost always have a story in my ears (or playing safely over the speakers in my car. For anyone who may need this – you should not wear headphones while driving in a car).
Over the years, I’ve discovered that some books shine in audio form. A great narrator can draw out humor, heighten suspense, or make a complex idea much easier to absorb. I think they’re also great bridges for those who prefer movies but want to try to get into reading.
These days, I like to keep a book going on my Kindle and one audiobook queued up on my phone. It’s a lovely balance—and a great way to make progress on my TBR pile without feeling overwhelmed.
So here, I’m sharing some of the best audiobook versions I’ve listened to. Whether you’re new to audiobooks or already hooked, these picks are sure to keep you listening:
Matilda by Roald Dahl (Narrated by Kate Winslet)
Whether you’re reliving your childhood or introducing this classic to a new generation, Winslet’s narration is an absolute delight. Her crisp delivery and character voices bring this clever tale to life in a whole new way. This audiobook is better than both the movie and reading the novel.
Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling (Narrated by Jim Dale)
This one needs no introduction, but if you’ve never listened to Harry Potter, you’re in for a treat. Jim Dale creates a distinct voice for every character, and his storytelling pulls you in like magic. It’s hard to pick if I like the audiobook or hard copies (I have and have read all of them) better.
His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman (Full-cast recording)
This is a rare case where a full-cast audiobook actually enhances the story. It feels like a radio play, with the author himself as one of the narrators. Perfect for fantasy lovers who want to get lost in a richly imagined world.
I haven’t read the books, other than listening to them. I have watched the series on HBO Max, and it’s really good. But it should come as no surprise that I think the audiobooks are better.
The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune (Narrated by Daniel Henning)
This heartwarming fantasy is pure comfort listening. Henning captures every ounce of the book’s quirky charm and gentle humor, giving each character their own voice and making it a cozy companion on even the most stressful day.
Nonfiction
While not a book but a genre, I couldn’t leave my recommendation of nonfiction books off this list. I’ll admit it—sometimes nonfiction books can feel like homework. But with the right narrator, they become endlessly engaging. A memoir read by the author or a well-paced history book becomes something you want to finish. I find that nonfiction is often easier to absorb when I hear it rather than read it. If you’re multitasking anyway, why not learn something while you do?
Some of my recent nonfiction listens have included memoirs and personal development titles— these are especially great options to try while taking a walk or working out.
Try Audiobooks with an Audible Subscription
If you haven’t already tried Audible, it’s a great way to build your audiobook library and listen on your schedule. Members get access to thousands of included title. You can even listen to a sample before buying or using a credit.
What’s in Your Ears Right Now?
I’d love to hear from you—do you have a go-to audiobook you recommend to everyone? Drop it in the comments, or let me know what your book club’s been listening to. And if you’re just getting started, give Matilda a try. I promise you’ll want to sit in the car just a little longer.
Happy listening!
