As a lifelong reader and a founding member of a book club that met for more than a decade, I’ve read my share of books chosen specifically for discussion. Over the years I’ve learned that some of the most memorable book club picks aren’t always the loudest or most dramatic stories — they’re the ones with unique premises and thoughtful themes that invite readers to slow down and reflect together. When I came across We’ll Prescribe You a Cat by Syou Ishida, it was described as a feel-good read and it’s title immediately caught my attention. A novel about a clinic that prescribes cats as treatment sounded both whimsical and promising — exactly the kind of book that can spark interesting conversation at the book club table.

REVIEW
As a lifelong reader and long-time book club member, I’m drawn to novels with unusual premises that spark discussion. We’ll Prescribe You a Cat by Syou Ishida fits that description, so I recently chose it for our book club.
I read the ebook edition, which felt fitting for a quiet, episodic novel like this. The short, interconnected stories made it easy to pick up and reflect between chapters.
I enjoyed the premise. A mysterious clinic in Kyoto that prescribes cats instead of traditional medicine? It’s such a unique idea — whimsical on the surface, but surprisingly grounded underneath.
Because the novel is translated from Japanese, there’s a gentle cultural nuance that adds to its charm. The pacing is subtle. The emotions are restrained. The transformations are quiet rather than dramatic. As a reader, you have to lean in a bit — but I don’t mind that. In fact, I think that’s part of its appeal.
Characters arrive at the clinic carrying emotional weight—grief, dissatisfaction, uncertainty—and leave with a cat specially matched to them. The novel shows how responsibility and companionship can slowly reshape a life through the daily routines of pet care.
It’s tender, reflective, and perfect for readers who appreciate character-driven storytelling.
BOOK CLUB RESOURCES
BCR RECOMMENDATION
I would recommend this as a gentle, discussion-friendly pick, especially for clubs that enjoy cats, translated fiction, or quieter literary reads.
Format Availability:
- Ebook
- Audiobook
- Hard copy
Be prepared to get in line at the library — it’s been a popular pick. It is currently not available on Hoopla, so plan accordingly if your club relies on that platform.
BOOK DISCUSSION
Although no official discussion guide is included with the book, that doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty to discuss.
One theme I found particularly interesting was the subtle use of personification. It raises a playful but thoughtful question:
In what ways do you personify your cats or pets?
Do you assign them motivations, moods, or moral judgments? Does that change how you relate to them?
This question alone could open up a lively and personal conversation — which, in my experience, is often when the book club is at its best.
If your group enjoys reflective, character-centered stories with a touch of whimsy, this one is worth considering.
You can also grab the BCR Book Club Discussion Guide as a resource for conversation prompts, too.
